Daniel Empfield has been involved in triathlon and multisport for a long time. First as a competitor in the late 70s and early 80s (including the first Ironman in 1981). He designed the first triathlon specific wetsuit. He also designed the first triathlon and time trial bikes. He still swims, bikes, runs and races today – as well as writing for and publishing Slowtwitch. Inside Triathlon listed him as one of their 10 most influential people – he knows what he is talking about.
In this article he discusses the benefits of training with a symmetric snorkel design, and how it allows you to forget about head movements whilst breathing and focus on technique and improve the symmetry of your stroke. He also talks with top athletes including Jan Frodeno on how they use the snorkel as part of their training regime.
